Designing buildings in the “infill” residential fabrics is a challenging process in Iran. The problematic issue regarding this kind of development is to overcome the consequences of shifts from single houses to apartments, and eventually to commercial fabrics in a relatively short period of time. This fast transformation causes chaos in the urban scale and affects the quality of life in the residential neighborhoods. In this project, the aim was to bring all the three mentioned typologies together in a homogenous manner, so that each of them can benefit from this adjacency. The initial program of the project consisted of a commercial unit and a residential apartment. It was decided to transform this program to villa, apartment, and commercial zones. A commercial zone could be beneficial for the city and the neighborhood by providing a platform for social interactions and events where different age groups could gather and spend time together. In this project this commercial space was designed to be a bookshop and a café to be used by local residents. This public space includes a balcony facing the trees on the adjacent street. The façade of the complex is a combination of glass and brick which not only provides adequate light and view but also protects the interior spaces from unwanted overlook. The upper floors of the building consist of two residential units. Above the residential units is a duplex residence in the form of a villa with a private yard. Considering the location of the side voids on the three neighboring buildings, it was decided to place the void in a way which not only enhances the quality of light inside the building, but also could help the adjacent buildings in providing adequate light to their interior spaces. The pieces of glass implemented between the brick blocks enhance the atmosphere of the interior spaces by letting more light entering the building. This quality was also extended to the side walls which enhances the interior quality of the adjacent buildings as well. The quality of the interior void was also enhanced by the implementation of greenspaces. The interior void in this project has been shifted in different floors in order to optimize sunlight penetration. This could be realized because of the adjacency of the residential units and the duplex villa and the resulting variations in the volumes. The swimming pool on the roof of the building has a glass floor which creates a visual connection between the roof and the duplex unit.
